Excess liability insurance, referred to as an umbrella policy, provides additional coverage to a general liability and automobile liability policy already in effect. Coverage is typically added in increments of $1 million and also may protect the insured from exclusions and gaps of primary liability coverage.
An umbrella policy takes over when the limits of the primary liability insurance have been exhausted, or when a claim develops that is not covered by the primary insurance. For instance, if you have $1,000,000 general liability coverage and have a claim in excess of $1,000,000, the umbrella will cover the additional settlement costs up to the umbrella limit.
